  • UPDATE 5/18/20 8:30 AM - LAST DAY OF SCHOOL - Jamestown Public Schools’ last day of school will be Wednesday, June 10th, except Ring Elementary School, which had to close for a day in February due to cleaning from a broken drainpipe. Ring Elementary School’s last day of school will be Thursday, June 11th.


    Each school principal will notify students and families about end of year close out procedures including the return of school property such as textbooks, calculators, library books, novels and athletic uniforms. Principals will also share information about procedures to collect students’ belongings in lockers or classrooms.

    The Jamestown Public School district recognizes the importance of internet access to all of our student households. As a result of the widespread economic need in our community, all Jamestown schools participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the National School Lunch Program. Because of our participation in CEP, JPS student households may qualify for a substantially discounted rate for internet access as part of the Spectrum Internet Assist Program.

    Spectrum Internet Assist provides qualifying households a high speed internet modem for $14.99/month, with the option to add in-home WiFi service for $5/month. This offer is available to new subscribers and those registered for 60 days of free internet.

  • 5/1/2020 2:00 PM - BUILDINGS REMAIN CLOSED THROUGH THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

    As announced today by Governor Andrew Cuomo, all New York State schools and colleges will remain closed through the end of the current school year. Remote learning, childcare for essential workers and school meals will continue to be provided during this time.

    As we shared with you last week, our district administration anticipated this outcome and enacted our Continuing Instruction Plan to ensure that remote learning will continue through the end of the school year. While our school buildings may be closed, learning is still in session for all students in the Jamestown Public Schools. We will also continue to provide childcare for essential workers through our community partners and school meals from our JPS Food Service Department.

    All Jamestown Public School buildings will remain closed through May 15th per the Governor’s latest directive today. Remote learning will continue during this time.

    Our district staff is currently developing a plan to continue support for learning at home through May 15 and potentially for the remainder of the school year. The plan will be presented to the community on April 21.

    We understand that there are many questions and concerns about the uncertain future and we are working very hard to provide answers. Our staff will be with you every step of the way to ensure that our children continue to receive the education, childcare and school meals that are needed during this time.

    A good resource for parents and families is www.wideopenschool.org, which is a free collection of the best online learning experiences for kids curated by the editors at Common Sense by grade level. There are learning opportunities in subject areas such as science and the arts, but also for life skills, emotional well-being, English language learners, special needs students and virtual field trips.

  • 4/7/2020 1:15 PM - REGENTS EXAM EXEMPTION

    The New York State Education Department officially announced today that June 2020 Regents exams are canceled. The guidance provided to school districts includes the following:

    • Students currently in grades 7-12 who would have been scheduled to take a Regents exam in June 2020 may be exempt, meaning that they will not need to take the exam in order to graduate.
    • In order to be eligible for an exemption, the student must currently be enrolled in a course leading to the Regents exam and must either receive credit for the course by the end of the current school year or through credit recovery by completing summer school in 2020.
    • The exemption also applies to exams required for an Advanced Regents diploma, such as Geometry, Algebra II, Chemistry, and Physics.

    New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Betty Rosa unofficially announced on Monday, April 6 that Regents exams will be canceled this June. Rosa said more details and guidance for schools will be provided on Tuesday, April 7. We will post updated information as soon as we receive this guidance.

    Charter Communications is offering free Spectrum Wi-Fi for 60 days to homes with students who do not already have an internet subscription. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. For more information call 1-844-488-8395 or visit Charter Communications.

    Students are also able to connect to school district WiFi access points in areas of the parking lot close to each school building. Only school-issued devices will be able to connect to the district network. Students may use these access points to check e-mail, visit Google Classroom and download documents to work offline at home. Please park near the building for the best connection and remain in your vehicle to maintain social distancing.

    As families adapt to changes in daily life caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it can be difficult to keep children occupied and feeling safe while also supporting learning at home.     In partnership with the City of Jamestown, JPS will be closing all school playgrounds and basketball courts to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 in our community. Meal pick-up will continue at all middle schools and JHS, and any school can be called for help students or families might need during this time. Only our school playgrounds and courts are closed.

    The Jamestown Schools PROMISE Fund recently held an athletic equipment drive. As there are still a few items left from the drive, the athletic department is distributing these items on Monday for student use during the school closure. The equipment will be given out during the school meal pick up times (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at Jefferson, Persell and Washington Middle Schools and Jamestown High School. Please be aware that there is a limited supply of equipment for distribution and it will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

    As we continue our efforts to serve children and families, we understand that there may be childcare needs beyond what our district can provide. Childcare needs may be changing, especially for those who provide essential services such as Healthcare, Child Welfare, First Responders, Food Manufactures, Transportation, Construction and Manufacturing, and Non-Profit and Social Service Agencies. Financial assistance will be made available to families who are considered essential to the health and safety of the community.

    In order to fully assess the child care needs of our families, the Chautauqua County Child Care Council is asking families who may need childcare to complete the following survey:

    Families who are considered essential workers and cannot be excused from work are encouraged to contact the Child Care Council Resource and Referral Specialist who can assist with finding child care beyond that which the district can provide.     Many students and parents have asked whether end of year assessments will be impacted by the extended closure of our schools. We have just learned that NYS has canceled all 2019-20 state assessments, including:

    • ELA, Grades 3-8
    • Math, Grades 3-8
    • Science, Grades 4 & 8
    • NYSESLAT
    • NYSAA

    We do not yet know whether Regents exams will be canceled.

    As families visit our schools for grab-and-go meals and childcare, we ask everyone to be mindful of the importance of social distancing to limit potential exposure to the coronavirus disease.

    When you arrive to pick up school meals, here are a few things to remember:

    • Please keep a distance of about six-feet between yourself and others.
    • All grab-and-go meals will be placed on a table for families to take away.
    • Only one family member should exit their car and walk up to the pick-up table.
    • School Resource Officers and staff will be present to maintain the flow of car and foot traffic at meal distribution sites.

    While classes are canceled for Jamestown Public School students, we understand the importance of childcare for working families. Beginning Thursday, March 19, our community partners will be able to provide limited childcare for Jamestown Public School students whose parents cannot be excused from work at this time.

    Childcare services will be provided five days a week beginning this Thursday from  7:30 AM to 5:00 PM at the following locations:

    • For any JPS student in grades K-5, childcare will be provided at Ring by the YMCA and Fletcher by the YWCA.
    • For any JPS student ages 3 and 4, childcare will be provided by the YWCA, A Children’s Place, and Chautauqua Opportunities.

    Breakfast and lunch will be provided by the Jamestown Public Schools.

    Interested parents must register in person on Wednesday, March 18, by visiting Fletcher Elementary School or Ring Elementary School between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Please bring verification of employment and work schedule with you to the registration.

    While classes are canceled at the Jamestown Public Schools, we will provide a variety of resources to support your child’s continued learning at home.

    Elementary School students will be provided weekly learning packets, prepared by your child’s teacher. Learning packets may be picked up from your child’s school during regular school hours. Your child’s school will contact you with additional information.

    Middle School students will be able to access learning resources using their iPads. Your child’s school will contact you once iPads are available for distribution so that you can make arrangements to pick up an iPad for your child to continue learning at home.

    High School students may be issued a Chromebook or iPad to be used at home to complete assignments provided by the teacher. Devices will be loaned to students who need them based on availability and course enrollment. Please stand by for additional information from Jamestown High  School.

    Additional resources for learning at home will soon be released on our website. More information will be coming soon.

    If you or your child has difficulty obtaining learning materials to be used at home, please contact your child's school for assistance.

    Beginning tomorrow, students may receive lunch along with breakfast for the following day.

    Students may pick up grab-and-go school meals at the following locations:

    • Washington Middle School
    • Jefferson Middle School
    • Persell Middle School
    • Jamestown High School.

    Meals will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the drop off zones at the middle schools and at the pool doors location at JHS. We recommend that you visit the pick-up location closest to your home.
