Grade 3 Curriculum
The expectations from second to third grade can be overwhelming for students at the beginning of the year. Third grade is when students learn to be independent, deep thinkers that evaluate their academic needs and set goals for their learning. With hard work, motivation, and a growth mindset third-grade students will make tremendous growth during the school year.
A large portion of our ELA curriculum focuses on being analytical. Students will be provided with various text styles, and they will have opportunities to make inferences based on the information they have read. Additionally, students will be asked text-based questions from which they are required to make an analysis and prove they're thinking with specific details from the text. These responses are referred to as a RADD response (Restate the Question, Answer the Question, Text Detail, Text Detail).
Students will also have opportunities to write paragraphs this year. When writing paragraphs, students are encouraged to plan out their thinking first. We use a planning page called RACES. This graphic organizer is a great tool to help students ensure all components of a paragraph are included. Each paragraph should include the following components: a topic sentence (introduces the reader to the topic), two examples with a detail from the text to support each example, transition words and a closing sentence (wraps up the paragraph; similar to the topic sentence).
The primary focus of third-grade mathematics is being able to fluently multiply and divide numbers 0-10. Students are presented with a variety of word problems where they have to decide whether or not they are required to multiply or divide. Each word problem requires students to show a picture (typically a tape diagram), write a number sentence (an equation) and write a word sentence that contains the answer. This process is referred to as RDW (Read, Draw, Write).
