What Are We Learning in First Grade?
MATH
In First Grade, students learn how to add and subtract to 100 with mastery of addition and subtraction to 10. They also measure in centimeters and inches, tell time to the hour and half hour, solve 1 and 2-step word problems, study place value to the tens and ones place, and create various data charts. At the end of the year, they begin working on the foundations of addition and subtraction with trading and borrowing.
ELA - LISTENING and LEARNING
In First Grade, students will study fairy tales and fables, the human body, early world civilization, early American civilizations, astronomy, the history of the Earth, animals and their habitats, early American history, America as a new nation and the founding fathers and frontier explorers, Lewis and Clark
ELA - SKILLS
In First Grade, students will learn phonemic awareness, capitalization and punctuation, adjectives, adverbs, nouns, verbs, and other building block-type skills. These skills help the students with their writing and reading comprehension.
WRITING and HANDWRITING
First graders will continue their practice with the Handwriting without Tears program and delve into the Step-Up-to-Writing program.
HOMEWORK
Please read with your child every night. This will help build vocabulary, fluency and background knowledge.
Skills homework will be given several nights each week. This is an excellent review of skills taught in school.
