Health Services

Schools are in a perfect position to teach students healthy behaviors. Schools can also provide services to promote student health. Research shows that healthy students are better learners and get better grades.

For students with chronic health issues such as asthma or diabetes, school nurses, nurse practitioners, and other health care providers play a large part in the daily management of their condition. School health services staff are responsible for communicating with the student’s family and medical providers to coordinate care and keep kids healthy and ready to learn. Management of a chronic condition can be provided by the school nurse in the heath office or through the School Based Health Center, housed at Jamestown High School. School health services staff play an important role in developing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) for students.

School nurses and the School Based Health Center staff also care for acute illnesses or injuries, and in some cases provide emergency care. This may include use of emergency medication for life threatening allergies, asthma, or seizures. The school nurse is responsible for performing vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings and makes sure each student has a periodic health examination either from their own provider or the school physician, Dr. Tariq Khan. In addition, school health services staff make sure dental care is provided and that the student has access to free or reduced cost dental care, such as through the UB Dental Van.

The school nurses and the School Based Health Center staff work closely with mental health counselors, school social workers, school psychologists, and behavioral specialists throughout the school and community to address issues such as depression, abuse, and addiction.

Please feel free to stop in and see your child’s school nurse and visit the health office or School Based Health Center. We are all dedicated to keeping your son or daughter healthy so that they may get the most out of their education at JPS.
