Records Access Management (FOIL)

Freedom of Information Law Requests (FOIL)

The Freedom of Information Law, effective January 1, 1978, reaffirms your right to know how your government operates. It provides rights of access to records reflective of governmental decisions and policies that affect the lives of every New Yorker. The law preserves the Committee on Open Government, which was created by enactment of the original Freedom of Information Law in 1974.

Jamestown Public Schools adheres to the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and Open Meetings Law. Both laws are administered by the New York State Committee on Open Government, an agency that is part of the New York State Department of State.

Not all information held by a school district is open for public inspection.

SUBMITTING A FOIL REQUEST

Any individual or organization wishing to obtain information from Jamestown Public Schools under the Freedom of Information Laws should follow this process:

  • Submit a completed form to the District Records Officer, Renee Garrett detailing the records that you are interested in viewing/copying. The information should be as specific as possible. The letter may be mailed to 197 Martin Road, Jamestown, New York 14701 or e-mailed to renee.a.garrett@jpsny.org

  • After receipt of the form, the District Records Officer will acknowledge the request within five days and indicate whether the information will be provided within the next 20 days. If the information requires extensive research, the time period may exceed 20 days.

  • The law allows that the school district may charge a maximum of 25 cents per page for photocopying.

  • Questions regarding a FOIL request should be directed to Renee Garrett at renee.a.garrett@jpsny.org
