Jamestown High School is proud to announce its 2019 Valedectorian, Finley Holt, and Salutatorian, Emily Spitz.
"Congratulations to Finley and Emily as this is no easy task in a school our size,” said JHS Principal Mike McElrath. “I'm proud of their ongoing commitment to excellence as exemplified by this distinguished honor!"
Valedictorian Finley Holt is the son of David and Mary Beth Holt. Finley will be attending Case Western Reserve University to study biology with the goal of going to medical school to become a doctor.
Mr. Holt has received numerous awards and honors including: 1st Place- Jamestown Community College Connections Speech Contest, All Western New York Football Academic Team- December 2018, Jamestown Varsity Red Raider Football Heart of a Champion Award, ADPRO Sports/Section VI Scholar-Athlete, All-Western New York Boys Golf Academic Team, Jamestown Community College Student of the Year Award, Norman Tinkham Award for Excellence in U.S. History, Rensselaer Medal- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute- STEM Scholarship award $125,000, Rhetoric Award 11th Grade, University of Rochester Innovation and Technology Award- Scholarship award $40,000, Allen F. Ayers Award (AP), Harry E. Kline Scholarship -AP Chemistry Award for Highest Average for a Male, Coach’s Award- Junior Varsity Wrestling, Bildungsroman Award, award for perfect score on Biology Regents, MJ Fletcher Award for English, JCC USA Scholarship, Oscar Pierce Award and Stanley Weeks Braw Caddie Award.
Mr. Holt has been actively involved while at JHS: Varsity Football, Varsity Golf, Junior Varsity Football Junior Varsity Wrestling, Freshman Football, National Honor Society, Key Club President, Ski Club and Chess Club.
“JHS has provided me with many great opportunities to advance myself as a student and person,” said Mr. Holt. “Advanced classes have enabled me to challenge myself in the classroom while sports and clubs have introduced me to many of my friends. JHS prepared me for life after graduation by providing me with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in life. My education has laid the groundwork that will propel me through the rest of my education, career, and life.”
Salutatorian, Emily Spitz is the daughter of Tim and Deanna Spitz. She will be attending Allegheny College to major in biochemistry with the goal of practicing medicine.
Ms. Spitz has received numerous awards and honors including: AP Scholar with Honor, Fall All-WNY Scholar Athlete, NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete 2015-2018, Commended Student in 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program, JCC Part-Time Students Dean’s List, Theodore M. Peterson Award for Chemistry, Grace Dorman Award for English, University of Rochester George Eastman Young Leaders Award, Jamestown High School Student of the Year, Varsity Swimming Coach’s Award, CCMTA All-County Band and Chorus, Allen Ayers Award, Ethel Davis Award, Jamestown School Forest Award, Lorena Bogey Doctorate Scholarship, MJ Fletcher Award for English and Jasmine Cantor Award.
Ms. Spitz has been actively involved while at JHS: Varsity Swimming, National Honor Society, JV and Varsity Softball, Concert Band, A Cappella Choir, Madrigal Singers, Jamestown YMCA Jets Swim Team, Key Club and Southern Tier Girls Babe Ruth Softball.
“JHS is special to me because it provides numerous opportunities to be well-rounded,” said Ms. Spitz. “It has been special to me because I have been able to be an athlete and a musician while getting ahead by earning college credits in high school. It has an outstanding music program with opportunities to participate in groups that perform high-difficulty pieces; it has sports in Section VI Class A; and it has a plethora of clubs to choose from. Most importantly, JHS provides a variety of advanced placement and college connections courses as well as other fun, thought-provoking, and career-oriented classes. I think that JHS has prepared me very well for college by allowing me to take many college level courses. I am already used to the quality of work expected of me at college. It has also exposed me to different career options and specialties in the medical field through field trips and networking with the Pre-Med and Health Sciences Academy.”
Jamestown High School’s 2019 Commencement Ceremony will be held Friday, June 21st at 7 p.m. in the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater.
