School Performance
The academic achievement of all students is the most essential priority of the Jamestown City School District. Our administrative and instructional staff focus our efforts on continuous school improvement, as measured by New York State assessments and state and federal school accountability systems.
The New York State School and District Report Cards provide summary information on the performance of our schools, including demographic information, state assessment data, and graduation outcomes.
The New York State School and District Report Cards are intended to be viewed online through interactive reports hosted by the New York State Education Department. ACCOUNTABILITY STATUS
The New York State Education Department (NYSED) annually reviews the performance of each school under the provisions of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The purpose of this letter is to provide you with information related to ESSA and the current accountability status of our school.
We are pleased to share that, over the past few years, the number of schools in our district with an accountability designation has decreased from five to two, and the number of underperforming student groups in our school has also decreased. We celebrate these improvements and will continue in our endeavor to ensure that all students are achieving high levels of academic success.
As a reminder, the ESSA accountability system annually measures the performance of each school using various indicators. These indicators include academic achievement on State assessments in ELA, math, and science, progress in learning English, and student attendance. When one or more of these indicators falls below statewide expectations, a school may be identified for improvement. The intent of this designation is to improve educational outcomes for all students, close achievement gaps, increase equity, and improve the quality of instruction.
Using these metrics, NYSED has notified us that two schools have been identified for “Targeted Support and Improvement,” or TSI, for one subgroup of students:
- Fletcher Elementary School
- Washington Middle School
As a result of this designation, a school improvement team will conduct a needs assessment, to be used to develop a comprehensive improvement plan. The improvement plan must specifically address how the school will improve the achievement of the student group that has been identified as underperforming. We will also survey and seek input from parents and caregivers. We see this as an opportunity for growth, and we welcome your involvement in the improvement process.
Please contact the building principal for additional information about your school’s designation or to find out how you can participate in our school improvement efforts. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with you to ensure that we are providing an excellent educational opportunity for all students.
