Jamestown PROMISE Fund Holds Athletic Equipment Drive!

promise fund donation list The Jamestown Schools PROMISE Fund Advisory Board announces a Community Athletic Equipment Collection Drive. The drive will collect a wide-range of equipment and footwear with a comprehensive list found at the JPS web site https://www.jpsny.org/.  The drive’s kick-off date will coincide with the 2019 Battle of the Classes on Wednesday, April 17th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the pool doors in the JHS parking lot. Jamestown Schools PROMISE Fund Board Members will also circulate during the Battle of the Classes, which begins at 6:30 p.m., asking for monetary donations to the athletic drive. The Community Athletic Equipment Drive will end on May 10th at the Joe Paterniti Invitational Track & Field Meet at Strider Field. Beginning April 17th through May 10th, donations can also be made at all nine Jamestown schools in designated bins.

The collection points will have contribution forms so that the contributors can document and establish the value of the donations. Once the collection drive is completed, JPS staff will distribute the equipment to students who have expressed interest in a particular sport, to help in team development and any other district athletic needs. The focus is to distribute at elementary and middle schools. With this collection, the Jamestown PROMISE Fund is aiming to encourage playtime with the equipment and free play during the summer months in the parks and green spaces in Jamestown.

JPS’ athletic program is known across New York State. Athletics is a time-honored tradition in Jamestown and the district’s teams have been strong and well known over the years winning many championships. Over a number of years, tight school budgets have not allowed for the regular maintenance and repair of athletic equipment, or the routine addition of all the needed new equipment. Also, some students are not able to play a sport because they cannot afford to buy the equipment or the teams may be playing with less, or subpar, equipment. In order to fill that gap, the Jamestown PROMISE Fund stepped in to hold the Community Athletic Equipment Drive.

“As important as academic pursuits and achievements are for our JPS students, physical fitness and activity are just as important,” noted John Zabrodsky Jamestown Schools Promise Fund Chair. Ben Drake, JPS Athletic Director added, “JPS needs to encourage participation at all levels in both organized and spontaneous ways. Collecting and distributing this equipment will support that aim.”

As well as tax-deductible equipment donations, monetary donations will also be accepted and recognized at the kick-off and closing events. Checks can be made payable to the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation for the JPS PROMISE Fund. JPS PROMISE Fund was founded in 2016 as a charitable, non-endowment fund via the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. Its mission is to expand the financial capacity of JPS through private, tax-deductible fund-raising activities. The purpose is to enhance the educational programs, projects, and opportunities for the JPS District. The Jamestown Schools PROMISE Fund has already helped create and fund a summer literacy program in Jamestown and held a musical instrument drive in September.
