JHS Spring Athletes Honored with Downtown Banners
Jamestown High School spring athletes are being honored by parents and their community with banners on display along Third Street in Jamestown for the month of June. On Thursday, June 4th at 6 p.m. there will be a vehicle parade to recognize these athletes. If anyone would like to participate and help recognize this group, please meet at Lincoln Elementary School parking lot where the vehicle parade will depart. Participants are encouraged to decorate their vehicles. Athletes will be on the passenger side of the vehicle. All participants must remain in their vehicles, adhere to current social distancing guidelines at all times and wear masks.
“A few of the moms saw photos on Facebook from another town where banners were on display to honor their senior spring athletes,” said mom Joanne Dean who helped plan the event with fellow co-organizer Melissa Rhodes. “I am very passionate about our Jamestown Public Schools and felt we should do something to recognize this group of kids. They missed out on their entire senior season, many of them worked a long time towards this highlight and they were denied it. I wasn’t sure if displaying banners was going to be possible, but the individuals I asked were beyond willing to make it happen. I can’t thank everyone enough that assisted in this project! We live in such an amazing community, that want nothing but the best for our youth. This is all about the kids, but would not have happened without everyone working together to help make this large idea a reality!”
Added Mrs Dean, “The City of Jamestown graciously agreed to hang the banners on city light poles. Rob Sigler from Rob Sigler Photography was very excited and willing to design banners and donated his time to create them. I made one call to Branden Maggio and he was able to secure the funding for all the banners in a matter of hours. This project would have been a greater challenge if these generous donations would not have been received. Thank you to Doug Larson (Larson Orthodontics), Jarod Zahn (ERA Real Estate), Chris McGowan and Branden Maggio (Stone Hill Homes), Matt Baglia (Slicktext), Taylor Scott (ERA Real Estate), and Chuck DeAngelo (Fessenden Laumer & DeAngelo Law) for your monetary support of our Spring Senior Athletes. The JHS Track Boosters helped facilitate things behind the scenes to help see this project to the end. Thank you all for your generosity!”
There are 40 banners covering spring sports including: track and field, softball, boys tennis, baseball and golf.
“I’m so thankful to the parents who helped organize this endeavor and the community members who offered financial assistance to make it happen,” said JPS Athletic Director Ben Drake. “This is not the way any of us wanted to see the year end, particularly for our seniors. This is a way to honor those seniors who did not get the opportunity to represent our school and community this spring.”
