Bush School Celebrates Strong Garden Club Membership

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. –  Spring has sprung at C.V. Bush Elementary School, and that means the school’s garden club is in full force and ready to begin an exciting planting season.

As the spring season for the club begins, advisors Amy Anderson and Annie Berg reported that 90 students from across the building signed up to participate. Due to the overwhelming interest, a waiting list has been created as well.

“This shows that our children are speaking and are eager to get outside, get a little dirt on their hands, and help contribute to the growth of something special,” said Berg and Anderson. “We are grateful to the continued support from our school district, local foundations, and the large number of family volunteers who have given their time to help this garden continue to grow.”

The Bush Garden Club — the first among Jamestown Public Schools elementary buildings — was established last school year following a United States Department of Agriculture Farm to School Grant that was awarded to the district and the Jamestown Public Market.

Following an initial installation of garden beds in October of 2022, six more garden beds were installed in late April of 2023 that allowed the club — students and a dozen parent volunteers alike — to plant strawberries, carrots, potatoes, and lettuce in early May. Fencing also was installed thanks to a donation from retired local business owner, Carrie Wolfgang.

The club has also benefited from the community’s generosity in the form of monetary support as well. Earlier this school year, the club received a grant from former Bush School Principal Roger Gilbert, who led the building from 1970 to 1982, through the Marian M. and Roger M. Gilbert Fund at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.

Students and staff also received a $333 dollar donation from money raised by the Jamestown Public Market through Give Big CHQ. All money donated has been used to build more garden beds, buy soil, and purchase adults and student garden tools.
