Jefferson tragic loss

Our JPS family is mourning the loss of a 5th grade student at Jefferson Middle School who unexpectedly passed away last night. The student touched the lives of so many and will be deeply missed. We are holding the family and friends close in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

“When we received this terrible news, my thoughts immediately went out to family and friends,” said JPS Superintendent Dr. Kevin Whitaker. “The impact of the passing of a young person has a lasting impact on those close to them, and the school district stands ready to offer support however needed.“

“Our Jefferson Family is deeply saddened after receiving this terrible news,” said Jefferson Middle School Principal Leslie Melquist. “The student was such a kind, warm-hearted individual and will be missed tremendously.”

We know this may be a difficult time for our students and staff. School Crisis Intervention Teams are ready to assist any students and staff in our buildings with any grief support they may need. We are here to help our community navigate this very difficult time.
